European and Commonwealth medallist Jake Wightman broke the British indoor 1,000m record at the Indoor Grand Prix in Boston. Finishing in second place behind United States’ Bryce Hoppel, Wightman crossed the line in two minutes 17.51 seconds.

Aged 25, Wightman won bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. The Grand Prix was his first indoor 1,000m race.

The previous British record of 2:17.96 was set by Matt Yates in 1992 and has stood for 28 years.

Taking to social media after the event, Wightman wrote, “No W, but an NR over 1000m tonight. 2 letters are better than one tho right?”

The New Balance athlete was racing in the brands FuelCell 5280 - a shoe launched last May, designed to make mile runners go faster.
