Jamaal Lascelles' leadership role expained after Bruno appointed team captain at Newcastle

Newcastle United club skipper Jamaal Lascelles is still playing a "huge role" behind the scenes at the club's Benton base.

Lascelles was ruled out for six to nine months back in April so is nearing the end of his long comeback from a serious knee injury. The former Nottingham Forest star has been pictured in the team pictures during celebratory shots this season.

Despite his long absence, Howe told Chronicle Live: "He is a huge presence still. You notice Jamaal every day, he comes in and does work, he is very dedicated and professional.

"I have to say he has been on top of all the details in terms of his knee and looking after himself. But on top of that, he has a huge role to play still.

"He will be in the job overseeing everything. He is in the changing room a lot and will be in the places where those who are playing will be. It is about using his wisdom and experience. He is helping all of the players young and old.

"Whether they are in good stages of their career or bad stages, he is giving people a pick up when they need it. He is brilliant at that."

Lascelles has also had the support of Emil Krafth with the Sweden defender going through the same injury. Both Lascelles and Dutchman Sven Botman have been in rehab for most of 2024.

Krafth said: "I'll always be there for them, whether in the dressing room or over the phone. As soon as I realised what happened to both Sven and Jamaal, I rang them and let them know I'm here for them.

"I have been through it and I know what it is all about. If they need anything I can help them. And remember both of them were there for me when I was injured for so long. We have a strong togetherness."
