James Blunt has paid an emotional tribute to his "American mother" Carrie Fisher, who was godmother to his child.

In a rare interview with The Sunday Times, he reflected on his friendship with the late Star Wars icon who he met before his debut album and lived with while he was recording Back to Bedlam in LA.

"The saddest thing is that my son will never get to know someone I thought was the most special person. Fisher was my American mother, and a real inspiration," he explained.

"My first album was called Back to Bedlam because I lived in a madhouse with her. She put a cardboard cutout of herself as Leia outside my room, with her date of birth and date of death on her forehead.

"I'm trying to remember what the date was, because it was around now - and I remember thinking it was too soon. She went out with a bang, as she was back in movies. Maybe it was a great time to go."

Blunt also joked that his upcoming album The Afterlove will "get terrible reviews", showcasing the deadpan sarcasm he's become known for on Twitter.

He has been writing with Ed Sheeran, but the two hit the headlines for an altogether different reason in November when Princess Beatrice reportedly cut Sheeran's face while pretending to 'knight' Blunt.

Last month, Sheeran shed some light on the bizarre story, but Blunt was more tight-lipped.

"I don't know what you're talking about," he joked. "Look, I don't know what Sheeran's made up to get publicity. Maybe the guy's desperate to sell records. If he wasn't in the f**king way, I'd be a knight by now."

The Afterlove is out on March 24 through Atlantic Records. Listen to his new single 'Love Me Better' below:
