James Corden has paid a moving tribute to the victims of the Manchester terror attack, praising the “strong, proud, caring people” of the city.

An explosion at an the Manchester Arena on Monday night left 22 people dead, including children, after a suspected suicide bomber set off an improvised explosive device.

The TV star’s voice broke as he gave an emotional speech during The Late Late Show, having heard about the bloody attack while filming.

Appearing to hold back tears, he said: “It shocks me every time we hear this sort of news. Attacks like this can happen, but especially when there will be so many children at this concert tonight.

“Many of you won’t have been to Manchester, but you will definitely have heard of it.

“It’s famous all over the world for so many wonderful things - great football teams, Man City, Man United.

“It’s famous for incredible music - Oasis and Joy Division.”

Horrifying footage has emerged since the blast showing the arena descend into panic after the bomb went off at about 10.30pm.

59 people were injured in the attack and taken to six hospitals across Manchester, with 60 ambulances called to the arena.

Officers at Greater Manchester Police are treating the incident as a terrorist attack.

It would be the worst attack in the UK since 56 people were killed in the 7/7 London bombings in 2005.

Mr Corden went on: “When I think of Manchester, the place that I know, I think of the spirit of the people there - and I’m telling you, a more tight-knit group of people you will be hard pressed to find.

“Strong, proud, caring people, with community at its core.

“And it was even possible, the spirit of the people of Manchester will grow even stronger this evening.

He added: “We’ll all go to bed holding our little ones even tighter this evening.”

In a statement, Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the “appalling terror attack”, with campaigning for the general election suspended for the day.

Ariana Grande, who was performing as part of a world tour, said the attack at her concert left her “broken”.
