James Earl Jones dies: 10 memorable roles from the titan of stage and screen
James Earl Jones, a towering titan of stage and screen and the beloved voice of Darth Vader and Mufasa, died on Monday morning at the age of 93, Variety confirmed via his representation.
Few actors can lay claim to so many historic soundbites in American cinema as Jones can, giving film some of its most iconic line readings: "No, I am your father." "Remember who you are." "I find your lack of faith disturbing."
Of course, those voice roles in Star Wars and The Lion King were the two most recognizable of Jones' career, as he continued to voice Darth Vader and Mufasa throughout the decades in various projects.
His stage credits include plays by William Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams, John Steinbeck, Eugene O'Neill, Ernest Thompson and Georg Büchner, and he acted for filmmakers like George Lucas, Stanley Kubrick, Francis Ford Coppola, John Sayles, John Milius, John McTiernan and Robert Townsend.
James earned an honorary Oscar, three Tonys (including its Lifetime Achievement Award), three Emmys, a Grammy, a Golden Globe Award and the Screen Actors Guild's Lifetime Achievement Award.
Consider his colossal impact. Just in a snapshot, Jones crafted the first run of Troy Maxon on stage in August Wilson's Fences, delivered one of the defining performances of Othello, played Malcolm X alongside Muhammad Ali in The Greatest, battled Conan the Barbarian, appeared in a Jack Ryan movie (Patriot Games) and played a president in The Man.
He also earned an Academy Award nomination for playing boxer Jack Johnson in The Great White Hope, helped fly the plane Major Kong rode the bomb out of in Dr. Strangelove, once voiced Maggie Simpson on The Simpsons, turned the Alphabet into riveting television on Sesame Street and told us "This is CNN" every time we turned on the cable news network to learn about the day's headlines.
The actor is a particular legend of baseball cinema, having starred in The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings, Field of Dreams, The Sandlot and its sequel. He even gave a powerful reading of the national anthem at the 1993 MLB All-Star game.

His final on-screen role came in reprising King Jaffe Joffer alongside Eddie Murphy in 2021's Coming 2 America, and his final vocal roles were fittingly Darth Vader (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) and Mufasa in the photorealistic Lion King remake.
James' Star Wars co-star Mark Hamill shared his condolences after news broke of his death.
