James Gunn has teased an "epic conclusion" to the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

The director – who will be returning for the franchise's third outing – was on the red carpet for Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 when he was asked what was in store for the third and final movie in this iteration of the antihero saga.

As well as teasing an "epic conclusion", he also hinted that this may not be the last we see of Star Lord, Gamora, Baby Groot and crew.

"I think the third movie is going to continue this trilogy the story of this iteration of this Guardians of the Galaxy," Gunn told Variety. "I think it's going to do it in a big way.

"I think we're going to come to an epic conclusion of who the Guardians are why and why they were bought together and I can't wait to tell that story to the people."

"It will be the final [movie] in this iteration of Guardians of the Galaxy, yes," Gunn added. "Who knows who will take up the mantle after that?"

Meanwhile, Gunn has also recently described Vol 1, Vol 2 and the upcoming Vol 3 as "as a whole" that "tell[s] one story".

Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 will be released on April 28 in the UK and May 5 in the US.
