Yahoo News Jamie Borthwick wants to be Ken Barlow of EastEnders
If Jamie Borthwick gets his way, he'll be hanging around EastEnders until he's a pensioner.
The actor is 11 years into his run on Albert Square as Jay Brown, an orphan taken in by the Mitchell family who is in the middle of a massive storyline exploring his parentage.
During an appearance on This Morning on Tuesday (August 22), Borthwick admitted to presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford that he has no intention of leaving the soap he joined at age 12.
"I love the show and my character," he said. "I love where the show is filmed, the people, the way the show is filmed with the quick schedules. I am happy and that's good for me."
His answer naturally led into Eamonn questioning if Jamie fancied a similar career to William Roache, the legendary soap actor who has played Ken Barlow on rival series Coronation Street since 1960.
"Why not? I'm happy and that's it," he answered.
Borthwick's satisfaction at work is understandable since he's just shot a rare EastEnders two-hander, in which Jay's surrogate father Phil Mitchell (possibly wrongly) confessed to killing the boy's real dad in 1994.
The story will take another dramatic turn next week when Jay Brown is haunted by a surprise visitor turning up in Albert Square looking for him.
Asked about how Jay's storyline will climax on This Morning, the actor would only tease: "I have a way I would like it to go but it is obviously all out of my hands. I can't say anything, I wouldn't want to ruin it for you!"
