Jamie Cullum has spoken about the importance of 'growing to meet each other' in a long-term relationship.

The musician, who has been married to model and author Sophie Dahl for almost 10 years, explained how they met in an exclusive interview for Red's March issue (out 31st Jan).

He said: 'We just really hit it off. I thought, “Man, that is a cool woman,” but I didn’t really entertain anything else. We were both in relationships and she wasn’t living in the UK, so we were just friends at first. Then, a couple of years later, she moved back here and that’s when our friendship became something else. We had a very immediate connection. While we both worked in a public way, our lives were purposefully quite private.'

'We were both really big readers, and we both loved cooking for our friends; she
still had all the same friends from school and I still had mine. She is also a straight talker, and I prefer people like that. I guess the definition of love is when you are able to reveal both your best and worst sides, and that person still loves you.'

The pair now share two daughters; Lyra, nine, and Margot, seven. Cullum has written a new album and the title track Taller is a play on the public's obsession with the 7-inch height difference between him and his wife.

'[The height comments] were always surprising,' he said, 'but I knew it would give me something to write about, so I used Taller as a metaphor for how when you’re in a relationship, you have to grow to meet each other. My emotional intelligence had to grow a lot being with Sophie, and loving her has challenged my perceptions about what it means to live, love and think.'
