Jamie Foxx will play Spawn in gritty reboot film

From Digital Spy

Jamie Foxx is returning to the comic book genre to reboot Spawn.

The Academy Award winner has signed on for the leading role in the latest big-screen version of the dark and spooky Image Comics property, according to Variety.

This version of Spawn is coming straight from the character's original creator Todd McFarlane, who is attached both write and direct. Also on board is horror hitmaker Jason Blum (Get Out) as producer.

Earlier this year, Todd McFarlane claimed that he was pushing for an R-rating for Spawn, comparing it to Deadpool 2 without the "naked butts" and unnecessary "f-bombs".

"When I'm talking R, I'm talking that there wouldn't be a lot of fun, there won't be any stupid lines in it. I never like my hero to make a joke right when the jeopardy was at its highest," he said.

"If I felt that my hero wasn't afraid right now, why should I be? I want my heroes to go 'Shit, where do I go now?'"

Spawn was previously adapted for a critically-panned 1997 live-action movie starring Michael Jai White in the title role, and a much more well-received HBO animated series that won a pair of Primetime Emmy Awards.

Foxx's own previous venture in the comic book genre, as the villain Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, didn't go very well either, but we have confidence that Spawn will turn things around.

The latest live-action Spawn reboot movie doesn't have a US or UK cinema date just yet.
