Black Panther was the big winner at this year’s BET Awards, picking up Best Movie and Best Actor for Chadwick Boseman’s performance in the titular role.

Jamie Foxx praised Marvel’s box office smash as he opened the show on Sunday night, taking a swipe at US President Donald Trump in the process.

During his opening speech at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles, Foxx, 50, took a dig at President Trump while introducing the superhero film.

He said: "I am not here to host, I am here to celebrate. Black excellence televised. We have to address the panther in the room. Ladies and gentlemen, we have to address the panther in the room.

"We do not need a president right now because we've got our king. King T'Challa, make some noise."

Donald Glover performed a version of his politically-charged hit This Is America on stage at the BET Awards alongside the ceremony's host, Jamie Foxx.

Introducing the song, Foxx told the audience he had been urged to write a joke about the single but said it had "stopped me in my tracks" and was not to be joked with.

Foxx encouraged the audience to sing the song before imitating Glover's dance moves from the video.

When Glover, who releases music under the name Childish Gambino, took to the stage, the pair sang a few lines from the song.

Glover then turned to the audience and praised his co-writers on the comedy-drama TV show Atlanta, Lena Waithe and Issa Rae.

Migos has won the Best Group Award at the 2018 BET Awards in Los Angeles.

Taking to the stage to accept the prize, Quavo, one third of the rap act, thanked God for the accolade.

His colleague, Offset, then took the mic and said, "I thank my wife", apparently in reference to his partner, fellow rapper Cardi B.

The pair are engaged though Offset's comments sparked speculation they had already married.

Nicki Minaj brought out fellow rappers YG, 2 Chainz and Big Sean during a performance at the 2018 BET Awards in Los Angeles.

The 35-year-old treated the audience at the Microsoft Theater to two singles from her upcoming album Queen, performing energetic versions of Chun-Li and Rich Sex.

Minaj then welcomed YG, 2 Chainz and Big Sean to the stage to perform their new single Big Bank.

The annual awards ceremony celebrates African Americans and other American minorities in music, film and sports.
