Jane's Addiction issue 'heartfelt apology' after Perry Farrell throws punch at Dave Navarro, cancel next show

The rockers' Boston concert ended abruptly when Farrell had to be restrained from attacking the guitarist on stage.

Jane's Addiction have apologized to fans for abruptly ending their Boston concert after an altercation between lead singer Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro Friday night.

"We want to extend a heartfelt apology for the events that unfolded last night," the band wrote Saturday in an Instagram story. "As a result, we will be cancelling tomorrow night's show in Bridgeport."

The concert slated for Sunday at Connecticut's Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater was the next stop on Jane Addiction's 2024 tour, their first to feature the group's original lineup — Farrell, Navarro, bassist Eric Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins — since 2010. Their website still lists 14 more upcoming shows.

During the incident, Farrell shocked the show's crowd after he threw a punch at Navarro towards the end of the band's set.

Per fan-captured video footage, the charged moment unfolded while the group was in the middle of performing their song "Ocean Size." Farrell can be seen walking towards Navarro and shoving the guitarist's shoulder. He then yells as Navarro, who attempts to distance himself from Farrell, before the singer hits Navarro's chest. The attack prompted crew members and Avery to intervene, pulling a heated Farrell away from the guitarist and restraining him.

Representatives for Farrell, Navarro, Jane's Addiction, and Live Nation did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly's request for comment.

Farrell's wife, Etty Lau Farrell, posted about the brawl on Instagram, writing on Saturday that "tension and animosity" had been brewing between the bandmates and explaining that her husband was upset about the concert's sound levels drowning out his vocals. This led to his assault on Navarro, whom Etty complimented for coolly handling the situation. However, she criticized Avery for taking "cheap shots," alleging that he put the singer in a headlock and punched him three times.

Describing the aftermath of the onstage fracas, she said her husband was "a crazed beast for the next half an hour" before he eventually "did break down and cried and cried."

Jane's Addiction split at the height of their popularity in 1991 while organizing and headlining the first-ever Lollapalooza festival. Farrell and Perkins went on to form Porno for Pyros, while Navarro and Avery briefly joined forces for the group Deconstruction. The band has reformed several times over the years, often without Avery.
