Jannik Vestergaard’s excellent season for Leicester City has been rewarded with a new three-year contract.

The Danish centre-back was integral to Enzo Maresca’s system as City won the Championship, the 31-year-old marshalling from the heart of the defence and pinging passes through the lines. Only Harry Winks, Mads Hermansen, and Wout Faes played more minutes than Vestergaard during the campaign.

It was a season in which Vestergaard turned around his story and his reputation at the club. Struggling to make an impact during his first season at the club, he was then left out in the cold by Brendan Rodgers and looked destined for an exit.

But Maresca brought him back into contention, and it worked out very well, with Vestergaard one of City’s leading performers. He will now hope to feature regularly on City’s return to the top flight, having only made 10 Premier League appearances for the club in the two years following his £15m switch from Southampton.

The length of Vestergaard’s new contract is likely to raise eyebrows among City supporters, especially with Maresca now at Chelsea. While the Dane used his intelligence and defensive nous to negate the impact of his lack of pace in the Championship, it may be more difficult to do that against the Premier League’s top strikers.
