Comedian Jason Manford has revealed his terrifying ordeal on the way back from a show on Saturday night, which he described as “the weirdest experience of my life”.

Manford was being driven back to London from a gig in Hayling Island when he got caught up in an 80-mile car chase with an angry driver.

He said that they had first encountered the driver when he tried to block a road that the star’s Mercedes van was trying to turn into, asking to borrow some jump leads.

Manford’s driver Lionel told him that they didn’t have any jump leads and tried to keep going, but the other driver began to shout “this is my town” and “what are you doing on the island?”.

Talking on his Absolute Radio show on Sunday morning, he said: “This is where it got scary. He was driving dangerously by cutting in front of us on the A3, breaking suddenly, coming up behind us, flashing us, beeping us, shouting out of his window, swerving into the road in front.

“It was getting to the point where it was a bit terrifying.”

After trying and failing to lose their pursuer at a junction, Manford and his driver were scared enough to decide that the best thing to do was stop off at Sutton police station in South London.

Manford said: “A police officer came out and they circled the block and found his car just abandoned, nobody in it.

“It was registered to Hayling Island as well so he’d come all that way. They know everything about him. It was the weirdest experience of my life.”

Police confirmed that they had been able to trace the car back to Hayling Island, where Manford had performed on Saturday night at the Sinah Warren Hotel.
