Jay Blades: West End Through Time premiered on Channel 5 on Saturday evening.

Famed for his appearances on BBC One programme The Repair Shop, the TV presenter was captured touring London's West End in search of local revelations and while stopping by luxurious department store Fortnum & Mason, Blades discovered that scotch eggs did not actually originate from Scotland.

Fortnum & Mason archivist Louise Woof was the one to break the news to him.

Recalling the experimental side to founders William Fortnum and Hugh Mason, who were focussed on providing travelling foods for their customers, Louise casually slipped into conversation: "So we invented the scotch egg in 1738..."

Blown away, Blades asked her to reiterate that the famous snack was in fact not created in the land of Iron Bru.

"Originally it was called 'scotched' rather than scotch and it was to do with how they were made," added Louise. "Because it was an egg covered with meat and breadcrumbs on top, it was seen as the perfect travelling food that would fit perfectly into your hand and it would be very nourishing and filling as well."

The TV star proceeded to sample one of the store's products for the cameras. "So... scotch egg was invented in the West End? I never would've believed that!" laughed Blades.

Prior to getting his hands on an original scotch egg, Blades also had the opportunity to sniff a very expensive tea resembling an 18th century drink.

Louise teased some "lovely floral woody notes" to look out for, with her guest replying: "I'm not good at this, I'm just used to like a builder's tea. That's wasted on me. Keep me in the market stall because that just smells like dust."

Smooth!
