Jay Slater disappearance should be treated 'like murder' says detective

The Jay Slater disappearance and hunt should be treated like "murder", a detective has claimed. Steve Gaskin, a detective chief inspector with the Metropolitan Police for more than 25 years and is a criminal psychologist, has spoken out over his view.

In a new interview today (Monday) as the hunt entered its eighth day, Steve said to the Mirror : "If we treat this like a murder from the outset, then if it turns out not to be then nothing's lost, we only have a few hours - people call it the golden hour, but really it's the golden 24 hours - to gather forensic evidence before it's too late.

"I'd want to know what he'd had from breakfast." Steve went on, explaining how he'd want to know "what was he doing there" and "everything about him", including "who was the last person to see him" Steve added it was crucial to learn everything we can about the missing 19-year-old

Jay's mum has said she has “not slept” since the 19-year-old disappeared on the Canary Island of Tenerife in the early hours of last Monday.. Asked how the family was coping with the situation, Debbie Duncan, aged 55, said: “We’re not.

"I’m not coping very well at all. I’ve not slept, I’m exhausted. It’s been awful.” The mum - who has been joined by Jay's pals and siblings over in the Canaries - went on and said: “I can’t give up on him, I just can’t.” She also said she did not know whether the Spanish authorities turning down an offer of help from the UK was because they viewed it as “an insult”.

The fundraiser page on GoFundMe set up by Jay’s friend - which has now raised £32,401 - was approved by the family, a post which claims to be from his mother Debbie said. The post said: “We have not yet withdrawn any funds and are currently covering the expenses, such as the trip to Tenerife and accommodation, ourselves.

"The funds will remain on hold with GoFundMe until we post a further update on this page.”
