A huge search operation has been taking place in Tenerfie for five days now for British teenager Jay Slater but he remains missing.

The 19-year-old had flown to th e Canary Islands with two pals to attend the NRG music festival. He didn't come back to his accomodation in Tenerife on Sunday evening after going to stay in an apartment with people he had met, reports the Mirror.

Jay, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, went missing on Monday morning after he told a friend he was walking back to his accommodation. He had missed his bus, and, despite being tired and short of phone battery, said he would brave the 11-hour trek.

His last known live location was in the popular hiking area Rural de Teno national park where the search remains as a focus today.

The apprentice bricklayer was last seen by the owner of the Airbnb where he went to stay as he left the accommodation on Monday.

Ophelia, the owner of the accommodation, said: "It’s dangerous walking around here, it’s easy to lose yourself. He walked up the road when I saw him for the last time. He was alone. He was walking normally, though he was fast."

Here is a recap of the full timeline of Jay's disappearance with verified information following speculation online regarding conspiracy theories.

What we know about Jay Slater's disappearance

  • Jay Slater was officially reported missing in the British media on Tuesday, following confirmation of the investigation by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The FCDO stated, "We are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities." This statement continues to be issued to the press.

  • Jay's mother, Ms. Duncan, flew to Tenerife on Tuesday to lead the search for her son. She revealed that individuals with "northern accents" had been calling her from hidden numbers, claiming they had her son captive due to an alleged debt. The press and police have yet to verify whether Jay is indeed being held captive.

  • On Wednesday, one of Jay's close friends expressed her belief that Jay had been kidnapped, describing his disappearance as suspicious. Her concerns grew when authorities shifted their search from Rural de Teno Park to tourist towns in the south, such as Los Cristianos, over 30 miles away. Later that day, police resumed their search in the mountains after determining the sighting in the south was a false lead.

  • Ms. Duncan described Jay as the "life and soul" with "everyone loving his company" in a heartfelt statement on Thursday. She told ITV News she regretted encouraging him to go on the holiday, during which he attended a three-day rave. She recalled being awoken by police at her home in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, who informed her she needed to go to Tenerife as her son had been reported missing.

  • By Friday evening, it was revealed that Spanish police, the Guardia Civil, had declined assistance from Lancashire Constabulary in the investigation. Despite Jay being from Lancashire, his home force stated their "thoughts are with Jay's family" and added that the Guardia Civil "confirmed that at this time they are satisfied that they have the resources they need."

What questions remain unanswered?

Where is Jay Slater?

Police on the island have stated that they are doing everything possible to locate the missing teenager, working closely with the British Embassy. Jay's last confirmed location was in Rural del Teno, a mountainous area in the island's west, near the town of Santiago del Teide. He had been staying in an apartment in the south of the island with friends. According to his friend Lucy, Jay was attempting to make the 11-hour hike back on foot.

Lucy had told the Manchester Evening News : "He's gone on a night out, he's gone to a friend's house, someone that he has met on holiday. One of the people he has met has hired a car out of here, so he's driven them back to his apartment and Jay has gone there not realising how far away it is. He's ended up out in the middle of nowhere. Jay was obviously thinking he would be able to get home from there."

Other wild theories and speculation - has been spewed online with Ms Duncan herself expressing her frustration at this on Friday night.

Why didn't Jay wait for a bus or make other travel arrangements?

According to his friend Lucy, Jay had met with other friends, one of whom drove him to another part of the island in a hire car. After missing his bus back, Jay found himself in the rural, mountainous area and attempted to make the journey back on foot.

It is not publicly clear whether Jay was near any facilities that could have helped him return to where he was staying with friends or if he was able to wait for a lift or get a taxi back to his resort.

Shortly before disappearing, Jay had been messaging friends on Snapchat and seemed to be in a normal and stable state of mind. His phone died around 8:50 am, with his last known location registered near a hiking trail, several hundred feet above the small village of Masca.

What was Jay's state of mind?

Jay's family and friends believe he was of sound mind when he went to walk back to the south of the island. Ms Duncan, of Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, added: "I just think it was a question of him not knowing the island well enough because it was his first time here and being a bit disorientated when it came to distances and not realising it was a 10-hour walk from where he went missing to his holiday accommodation.

"I know the last place he spoke to his friend Lucy was in the mountains and I think the police have got a more precise location now. I imagine they’re also speaking to the people whose place he went back to. Once I’ve spoken to the British consulate again, I’ll be clearer about what I’m going to do but I imagine we will head up north nearer the spot Jay was when he disappeared."

Has Jay left the country?

Authorities have not confirmed any information suggesting that Jay has left Tenerife, though this is considered highly unlikely. The Rural del Teno nature reserve, where Jay was last seen, is extremely remote and lacks the infrastructure for him to have reached an airport quickly. According to the Manchester Evening News, the Airbnb rental where Jay stayed before disappearing is "miles from civilization."

Ms. Duncan, Jay's mother, has stated that she has Jay's passport. She added that she does not expect him to reappear for his flight home, although the timing of his return journey is unclear.

A fundraiser set up by a friend to "get Jay Slater home" has received more than £24,000 in donations. A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said, "We are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."
