Missing Jay Slater's best friend today called for British police to join the search in Tenerife for the teenager, saying: "It's not looking good now."

Lucy Mae Law, 18, is believed to be the the last person Jay contacted before his phone died. As reported, Jay had gone to Tenerife to attend the NRG music festival on the island. Lucy – who went to the island with him to attend the festival – said that he had gone to stay with people he had met on holiday after a night out. Follow live updates from the search here.

She said she had received a call from the apprentice bricklayer at around 8.15am on Monday after he missed the bus and was trying to walk back, although he said he was lost, needed a drink of water and had only 1 per cent battery on his phone. His phone then cut off, with his last location showing as the Rural de Teno park – a mountainous area popular with hikers.

As search efforts continue on the island, Lucy told the Mirror: "We need British police here. I just want to find my mate. He’s been missing three days. It’s not looking good now. We feel as though it’s down to us to find him and that we’re doing more than the police.

"The police here don’t speak English and don’t even have a translator after three days. I feel like they’re fobbing me off. They’re still asking me the same questions as when I first reported Jay missing.”

She added: “The two boys that he was last with have left the country. They need to be questioned by British police.”

Speaking while overlooking a ravine where it is understood Jay’s phone last ‘pinged’, Lucy, who has just finished a college course in Travel and Tourism: “A lady said she last saw Jay at 8am walking at pace. She said her brother owns the house.”

Lucy’s mum Rebecca, 46, who works as a midwife, said: “Jay had almost finished his bricklaying apprenticeship and has been thinking about buying a van. Jay’s mum is absolutely devastated. She wants him found. His dad was up here searching yesterday. His brother is also here now and is looking after their mum. Debbie went to the police station at Los America’s this morning, but they just keep asking her the same questions."

Another friend of Jay’s said: “We’ve been told the two guys Jay was last with are from Luton. One is known by the nickname Johnny Vegas. We’re sure they know something.

“The island police say they have copies of their passports, but we’ve been told they flew back to Gatwick yesterday. We drove all round the ravine yesterday for 12 hours and we’re getting out shouting and screaming Jay’s name, but we couldn’t find anything."

Meanwhile, a group of nine friends of Jay's are flying out to Tenerife to join the search, it's been revealed.

The details have been revealed on an official Facebook site. They say they are looking for 'cheap accommodation for Friday to Monday'.

"All we want to do is find Jay," they say.
