Jean Smart Went for Timeless Elegance at the Emmys
A legend has arrived. Jean Smart, who is nominated for her headlining role as an iconic Las Vegas comedian in the HBO comedy Hacks, is on the Emmy's red carpet tonight and she's taking a glam cue from her onscreen counterpart.
Smart walked the carpet, alongside fellow Hacks star Kaitlin Olson, in a timeless navy gown with transparent, flowing sleeves.
The actress, who is a legend in her own right in the comedy scene, is going for the hat trick this evening, looking to rack up her third Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy win for the role of Deborah Vance on Hacks's third season. She previously won the category for her portrayal of the jaded stand up in 2022 and 2021 (Smart also holds three additional Emmys—one for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2008 for Samantha Who?, and two for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her recurring role on Frasier in 2000 and 2001.)
The role is one that's close to Smart's heart. "I wanted to be a stand-up comic when I was a kid," she told T&C in 2021. "When I was in middle school, I went to a costume party as Phyllis Diller. When my agent sent me the script, I said, ‘You've ticked off that box on my bucket list.’"
She's also far from the only representative from Hacks in attendance tonight—the series was nominated for 16 awards this year, including an Outstanding Supporting Actress nod for Hannah Eibinder, Outstanding Supporting Actor for Paul W. Downs, Outstanding Guest Actor and Actress nominations for Christopher Lloyd and Kaitlin Olson respectively, and Outstanding Comedy Series.
