Jenna Bush Hager Reveals She Won't Be Getting Her 10-Year-Old Daughter a Phone for a 'Long Time'
"I want her to live in this world," Bush Hager said of her daughter Mila
Jenna Bush Hager is setting a boundary with her kids when it comes to cell phones.
On Tuesday's episode of Today with Hoda & Jenna, Bush Hager, 41, chatted with her co-host Hoda Kotb and guest Matthew McConaughey, revealing that she wasn't planning on getting her kids a cellphone anytime soon.
"I'm so interested in your family and social media because every kid you see has a phone in hand and is trying to navigate their way through that hornet's nest," Kotb says to McConaughey. "You waited until your child was 15 — how did that conversation go? Because I imagine he wanted it early on."

"Oh he wanted it early on — probably when was 12, definitely 13, definitely when he was 14. And we waited until he was 15," the actor says, referring to his recent decision to let son Levi join social media.
"We tried to look at the upfalls and the downfalls. We said, 'Look, this is not like sending your kid off to college but it is like sending your kid out with a bunch of strangers into the world. Some you will know, some you won't; some will be fair, some will not; some will give you a thumbs down no matter what you said, they're just trolling. Does that affect you? It's going to affect you. It affects me!'"
"So the main thing was this: go live your life, Levi and if you're doing something you think is worth sharing, then share it. Don't wake up every morning thinking, 'What can I do that will be a good share?'" McConaughey concludes.
"It's not living! We always talk about this because we're actually following your lead," Bush Hager tells McConaughey. "I have a 10-year-old, she won't be getting even a phone for a long time."
"She knows that," the mom of three says. "But also, I want her to live in this world."
"Keep the identity live first," the Dazed and Confused star tells Bush Hager. "This is when the kids are forming their identity. If you're on the social media too early, should you not feel confident — that's the tail-wagging dog."
"But also, I don't want her just scrolling. I want her writing songs or reading," Bush Hager adds.
"Attention span is a big thing. They tell you their attention span becomes way too short if they're on it too early," McConaughey shares.
Bush Hager shares her three kids — son Hal, 4, Poppy, 8, and Mila — with husband Henry Hager, 45.
