Jennifer Lawrence's mother! has been defended by Paramount after an audience backlash and poor box office.

Darren Aronofsky's psychological horror has proven controversial for its bold ideas and WTF ending, but the studio remains fully behind supporting and producing such an original mainstream movie.

"This movie is very audacious and brave," Paramount said in a statement. "You are talking about a director at the top of his game, and an actress at the top of her game. They made a movie that was intended to be bold.

"Everyone wants original filmmaking, and everyone celebrates Netflix when they tell a story no-one else wants to tell. This is our version. We don't want all movies to be safe. And it's okay if some people don't like it."

Some people in the US definitely didn't like it, as mother! received a unanimous disapproval rating of 'F' – the lowest rating possible – from CinemaScore, which surveys audiences on movies' opening weekends.

One of the criticisms has been about the movie's ending which isn't wrapped up neatly, but Aronofsky has been talking about what it means for him.

"I wanted to make a film from the point of view of our mother, and I don't think the story of our journey with our mother is over yet, so this is very much a cautionary tale as well as reflection," he explained.

We've also had our say on what the ending means, so make up your own mind by seeing mother! in cinemas now.
