'Jeopardy!' creates a Broadway designer category

NEW YORK (AP) — Costume designer William Ivey Long has made outfits for more than 60 Broadway shows and won six Tony Awards, but he's about to get an honor never before offered — his own category on "Jeopardy!"

The hit syndicated game show hosted by Alex Trebek said Long will be featured on Friday's telecast, the first time an entire category about a single Broadway designer has been created for contestants.

"Jeopardy!" has long given Broadway a boost, offering such categories as "Broadway Musicals" and "Pop Singers on Broadway" — priceless publicity since "Jeopardy!" reaches 25 million viewers each week.

Last year, the TV show took the unprecedented step of having an entire category dedicated to "Wicked" and producers did it again in November for "Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella."
