Jeremy Clarkson is said to have been "so intent" on acquiring a village pub that he reportedly offered the owner nearly £1 million shortly after their first encounter.

The TV personality, aged 64, has recently made headlines with the purchase of the Windmill pub near Burford in Oxfordshire. Clarkson is believed to have secured the freehold of the establishment, which is notably not tied to any brewery.

This independence could allow him to sell his own beer and farm produce at the pub, conveniently situated about ten miles from his Diddly Squat Farm.

Currently, the pub is undergoing renovations. Earlier this week, Jeremy hinted at progress in an Instagram post: "New pub coming along. Only the water, gas, lavatories, staff and electrics to sort and we'll be ready to go."

According to MailOnline, Clarkson was "so intent" on taking over the local watering hole that he put forward an offer of "almost £1 million" within moments of meeting the owner. It's worth noting that Jeremy himself had previously mentioned acquiring the property for "less than £1 million", reports the Mirror.

Jackie Walker, 79, who reportedly launched the pub back in 1983 with her late husband Alan Walker, hadn't even listed the property for sale when she was approached with Jeremy's unexpected proposal, which rapidly progressed to a completed transaction shortly after they met. She recounted to the publication how a film crew entered her pub and before she knew it, an associate of Jeremy's was at her door, enquiring if she would consider selling.

The woman was allegedly invited to discuss potential terms at his home in a neighbouring village. She recalled: "The first thing Jeremy said to me was I suppose you want a lot of money for this."

He is reported to have made her an immediate offer that exceeded her expectations, which she accepted straight away.

Jackie, who reportedly agreed instantly, mentioned that it made her "laugh" but acknowledged that it "is" Jeremy.

She informed the media outlet that they met for coffee at his house and she brought along maps of the property for their meeting. She described Jeremy and his partner Lisa Hogan as "charming," and confessed that she "really liked them".

She further stated: "I had not been planning to sell the place, but I wasn't that happy with how it was being run and I am not getting any younger."

Jackie revealed that she stepped back from the daily operations of the pub around 2013 after her husband Alan passed away, aged 73, 11 years ago and allowed leaseholders to continue its operation. It's reported that Jeremy bought out the remaining five years on that lease from husband and wife leaseholders Barry and Vanessa Eason when he finalised the deal.

The Easons are believed to have left last month.

Jackie went on to share her assumption that Jeremy will create a TV series "out of it". She expressed hope that he makes a "big success" of the pub, reflecting that she and her late husband Alan had "so much fun running it".

The project is set to be captured by the same production team behind Clarkson's Farm for Amazon Prime. Jeremy has hinted at plans to reopen the Windmill later this year.
