Watch: Jeremy Vine hugs his mother for the first time in over a year

Jeremy Vine hugged his mother for the first time in over a year today (17 May) on his Channel 5 show.

The presenter became emotional as he welcomed his mother Diana on to the studio floor of the talk show to celebrate his 56th birthday.

It came as certain social distancing restrictions were lifted in England on Monday, with indoor meetings now permitted as well as hugs.

He told viewers: “I’m delighted to say I can hug my mum for the first time in more than a year, let’s just see if we can find my mum in the studio somewhere.

“She’s coming up for my birthday and I resisted giving you a hug as I saw you arrive during the adverts.”

She handed her son a wrapped gift and embraced him. A tearful Vine remarked: "I’m going to cry now,” as she told him: “Love you, darling.”

Earlier in the programme, Vine's co-presenter Storm Huntley had presented him with gifts made by a previous guest, a knitted iPad case with his face on it, and another with the faces of Line Of Duty stars Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar.

As well as the relaxing of social distancing rules, the ban on foreign travel has also been lifted.

Travellers are able to visit 12 countries on the government's green list where they won't have to isolate upon their return.
