Jermain Defoe: My heart will always be at Tottenham

Jermain Defoe says his heart will always be at Tottenham and believes Mauricio Pochettino is building a "special" team in north London.

Defoe has played for six clubs during his professional career but enjoyed the majority of his peak years at White Hart Lane.

The 34-year-old is the fifth top goalscorer in Spurs' illustrious history and looks back on what he achieved at the north London clubs with pride.

“You move on and new players come through, fantastic players, but I’m still there as fifth all-time top goalscorer," Defoe told Tottenham's official website.

"I just think of the legends who have played at the club. To know that when I’ve finished playing I can look at that list and see my name is something special.

"My heart will always be at that club.”

Spurs will dine at Europe's top table next season, having secured their best top-flight finish since 1963 this season.

With a new stadium on the horizon there is a very positive outlook among Pochettino's squad and Defoe is adamant his former club are on the up.

“It’s special watching this team, not just winning games but going unbeaten at home all season and not just winning, dominating games as well. Arsenal, dominated.

"I watch as many Spurs games as I can and I can’t remember playing Arsenal and just dominating from start to finish.

"Look at the games this week - Harry Kane - I always said ‘H’ was a finisher. It’s a special time for the club."

Meanwhile, Defoe's future this summer remains uncertain following Sunderland's relegation.

West Ham have cooled their interest in the striker, who has ben widely linked with a move to Bournemouth.
