Jermaine Jenas The One Show and Match of the Day presenter sacked by BBC
Jermaine Jenas has been sacked by the BBC following allegations of inappropriate behaviour. Jenas had been a pundit and presenter on Match of the Day and host of The One Show. His career prior to broadcasting included playing for a number of football clubs including Tottenham, QPR, Newcastle, and earning 21 caps for England.
A BBC spokesperson told Mirror Football: "We can confirm that he is no longer part of our presenting line up." The BBC later confirmed Mr Jenas was sacked due to issues with his "workplace conduct".
The former footballer's last appearances for the BBC were co-hosting The One Show with Alex Jones on July 22 and being part of the Match of The Day panel on May 4. He also provided commentary for the BBC during Euro 2024, covering Spain's semi-final win against France, reports the Mirror.
As news of his BBC exit emerged, Jenas had already taken up a new role at talkSPORT, presenting the drive time show alongside another ex-Premier League player, Jermaine Pennant. Most recently, Jenas was last seen on air commentating on Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Ipswich for TNT Sports last Saturday.
BBC News reports Mr Jenas' departure from his presenting roles is due to 'workplace conduct'. It's understood a complaint was made several weeks ago which led to Mr Jenas being removed from his presenting duties.
The BBC launched an internal investigation immediately after concerns were raised about Mr Jenas' behaviour. He was taken off the broadcaster's official channels and following routine enquiries, his contract was terminated.
Alex Kay-Jelski, the BBC's new Director of Sport, is believed to have played a significant role in this process. After retiring at 31, Mr Jenas swiftly transitioned into punditry. During his 14-year senior career, he made 436 professional appearances for clubs and earned 21 England caps. He scored one goal for his country, against Switzerland, at Wembley, in 2008, but a knee injury forced him to retire early.
In 2020, the now-41 year old joined The One Show, co-presenting with Alex Jones, and became a permanent host a year later. Alongside his football coverage for TNT, he also serves as the main presenter for Formula E, a role he took on last year. It's unclear whether his departure from the BBC will impact this role and Formula E has been approached for a comment.
Last December, Mr Jenas, who established the Aquinas Foundation in 2012 to boost the aspirations of young people in Nottingham schools, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Sport degree by Nottingham Trent University. The dad of four, married his wife Ellie in 2011. The couple have two daughters and a baby son. He also has an older daughter from a previous relationship.
His departure from the BBC follows the corporation's governing board announcing an independent review into its workplace culture. The board stated: "We remain concerned about the potential for inappropriate workplace behaviour, particularly in creative and editorial environments."
"While challenges related to power imbalances in the workplace are a challenge for multiple employers, the BBC must hold itself to the highest standards. The BBC has clearly articulated Values and a strong Code of Conduct and there has been much progress in recent years."
"However, the Board will commission an independent review that will make recommendations on practical steps that could strengthen a workplace culture in line with BBC Values."
It's understood that Mr Jenas was being tipped as the future face of BBC's flagship football programme, potentially taking over from Gary Lineker. In 2021, he expressed his ambition, saying: "Match Of The Day is the biggest job on television, and if I ever got the opportunity of course I'd say yes. When Gary decides to call it a day, I'm sure the BBC will have a look around and decide who's the best fit for the job."
