Jet2 passengers heading to Spain issued warning over 'growing unrest'
Jet2 has issued a warning to passengers who are set to travel to Tenerife and Lanzarote in the summer of 2025. There is growing concern in the Spanish islands due to the backlash and unrest caused by general over-tourism and an influx of UK tourists.
Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2, said: "Anti-tourism protests and derogatory comments from local administrations make tourists feel unwelcome. Not everyone is rich, and many tourists simply want an affordable and relaxing holiday. If they feel unwanted, they’ll look elsewhere."
Mr Heapy also said that the new 100% property tax on expats buying homes could set a "dangerous precedent", potentially detering tourists from visiting in the future.

He added: "Rising taxes drive up the overall cost of holidays, reducing demand, and while Mogan’s tax is small, it sets a dangerous precedent. Governments need to enforce existing regulations and focus on controlling illegal rentals rather than penalising compliant operators.
"They should also work with airlines and tour operators to promote the Canary Islands in key markets like the UK."
Jet2 customers were also reminded of a handy flying hack that could save them time at Newcastle Airport. Holidaymakers have been issued advice on how Spain's 'tourist ban' could affect their next trip,
According to figures from the National Statistics Institute, Spain logged a record 21.8 million international visitors this summer, during a period when anti-tourism protests took place in the country. This is a 7.3% rise on 2023, and makes Spain the second most popular tourist destination after France.
