UK tourists have been warned over a little-known passport mistake that'll see them BANNED from travelling. UK holidaymakers flying out with Jet2, Ryanair, Easyjet and TUI have been warned over being turned away at the boarding gate.

Gavin Lapidus, director of travel consultants eShores, urged people to check the physical shape of their passports before holidays. "A passport is your gateway to the world, and even a little damage can result in complications at airport check-in desks,” he said.

“Most passports last ten years, during which they can expect some wear and tear. When travelling, your passport is checked for damage, tampering, and validity, with damaged documents facing rejection, putting an end to your holiday.”

Gavin explained: “A common misconception is that as long as all the information on your passport is present, visible and legible, it is acceptable for travel. However, this isn’t always the case. Lifted laminate on the personal details page can cause rejections, even if the photograph and information can be easily viewed, as can torn or defaced pages.

“Holes and cuts are usually used to cancel old passports, so they’re unacceptable in a current passport. Keep in mind that if the chip on the passport can be seen from the back cover, this can also lead to rejection.” Gavin also urged people to avoid novelty stamps in your passport.

He also urge people to ensure there is no water damage and avoid getting a loose or detached passport cover. If your passport has been lost or stolen, you must cancel it before applying for a replacement. If your passport is damaged you must replace it. You may not be able to travel with it.

HM Passport Office will consider your passport damaged if you cannot read any of your details, any of the pages are ripped, cut or missing or there are holes, cuts or rips in the cover or the cover is coming away or there are stains on the pages (for example, ink or water damage).

EasyJet will not allow passengers to travel with a damaged passport that is so damaged that its authenticity is questionable. Ryanair accepts valid passports and national identity cards as travel documents. However, a damaged passport may not be considered valid for travel, depending on the extent of the damage.

Jet2 says: "A damaged passport may not be valid for travel, depending on the extent of the damage. Minor wear and tear, such as a slightly bent cover, usually doesn't affect validity." TUI adds: "If you're traveling with TUI and your passport is damaged, you can check GOV.UK advice to determine if it's still valid for travel. The extent of the damage will determine if it can be used. Minor wear and tear, like a slightly bent cover, usually doesn't affect validity."
