Crusaders boss Declan Caddell welcomed Jimmy Callacher back to his first-team squad on Tuesday night, but it might be some time before fans see the defender in first-team action.

Callacher has featured in two reserve team games since returning from a cruciate ligament injury sustained in August last year.

The 33-year-old is closing in on a senior return, some 13 months on from picking up the serious knee injury in a game against Newry City. It came just three months after joining the Crues from Linfield in a two-year deal.

Caddell says Callacher has been making encouraging progress, but insists he won't be rushing the experienced defender back. However, the new Seaview boss believes the experienced centre-half can continue to be an influential presence in the changing room.

Explaining the former Linfield man's inclusion on Tuesday night, Caddell said: "Jimmy is good and has been working hard the past five months or so. He has been in full training now for the past six weeks and played two reserve games; two 45 minutes.

"One thing I don't want to do is rush him back too soon. He has a bit to go in terms of sharpness and fitness, which is understandable considering he missed a full year of football. But it's all going the right direction.

"That's why I had him in the squad last night. That leadership and direction you get from Jimmy. His experience is like gold dust in the Irish League. And having him around the pitch and players is a bonus.

"Jimmy's presence is invaluable. We have always been fortunate since my time at the club, in having really good professionals and driven individuals who want to get the job done and succeed.

"We have five new signings, and they see that leadership and experience from players like Jimmy, and what it takes to succeed in this league."
