A report into a catalogue of sex attacks by the disgraced presenter at Stoke Mandeville Hospital revealed staff knew of 10 allegations against him but failed to act. And it has been warned many aspects of the Savile scandal could be repeated in the future. More »

  • PM Misses Target As Net Migration Rises
PM Misses Target As Net Migration Rises Thu, Feb 26, 2015

David Cameron is "disappointed" after missing his net migration target by nearly 200,000, leaving his pledge to reduce it to the "tens of thousands" in tatters. The Prime Minister and Home Secretary Theresa May had set the target of reducing net migration - the difference between people coming to the UK and those leaving - to below 100,000 by this May. But the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show that in the year to September 2014 alone net migration has risen by nearly as much as 100,000 - from 210,000 to 298,000. It means net migration is now higher than when the coalition came to power in 2010 when it was 244,000. More »

Jimmy Savile: Stoke Mandeville Hospital ignored warnings about sex crimes Thu, Feb 26, 2015

Warnings about Jimmy Savile, the late BBC TV presenter revealed two years ago to have been one of Britain's most prolific sex offenders, who preyed on victims at hospitals where he volunteered, were ignored, official reports said on 26 February. New reports into his activities revealed he abused 60 people at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, the birthplace of the Paralympic games, between 1969 and 1992, and despite it being an "open secret" that he was a "lecher", nothing was done. The informal complaints were neither taken seriously nor escalated, said Androulla Johnstone, lead investigator for one of the reports, while the formal one was dropped by the complainant's father due to her serious ill health. Reports: NHS Failings Let Savile Abuse Children Thu, Feb 26, 2015

A series of damning reports are expected to confirm institutionalised failings which allowed Jimmy Savile to abuse vulnerable children at NHS hospitals. The long-awaited report from the Department of Health will address the "lessons learned" from the Savile scandal, but is unlikely to lead to managers or staff being held to account for failing to stop his abuse. A report from Buckinghamshire NHS Trust will focus on his offending at one of Savile's favoured hospitals, Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire, the birthplace of the Paralympics. The privileges and access afforded to Savile at Stoke Mandeville included a bedroom in the nurses' accommodation. More »

Glitter: Pop Star Who Turned Into A Monster Thu, Feb 5, 2015

Gary Glitter's conviction marks the lowest point in a spectacular fall from grace for the ageing rocker. While his stardom faded, Glitter's appeal continued to endure into the 1990s, with his face appearing in advertising posters for Heinz soup and British Rail. However, his career came crashing down when he was arrested, after dozens of images of child sex abuse were found on his computer's hard disk.
