JK Rowling has accused Jeremy Corbyn of turning Labour into a "solipsistic personality cult".

The Harry Potter author, who has been a generous donor to the Labour Party, tweeted: “Incompetent clowns in power and the opposition turning into a solipsistic personality cult. I'm so ****ing depressed.”

Ms Rowling has been a prominent critic of Mr Corbyn during his tenure as Labour leader, attracting criticism from his grassroots supporters.

In the run-up to his re-election last year she tweeted: “One day in the far distant future we'll look back and we won’t laugh, because this isn’t bloody funny.”

The author’s criticism came as it was revealed that this year’s Labour conference organisers had plans for the leader to address fans while walking on water.

The stunt has been likened to biblical stories about Jesus Christ, with one MP commenting:“They thought it would make a great picture – JC literally walking on water, sort of.”

The party’s conference was kicked off with a festival style gathering in Brighton Park, with supporters chanting the leader’s anthem, “oh Jeremy Corbyn”. He set out his plans to use his grassroots support to change the Labour Party and become Prime Minster.

Mr Corbyn said: "Wide participation in policy making leads to more support for the policies we get, leads us to that movement that will bring about the end of this government but - beyond that - the end of the system of inequality and injustice in our society."

Meanwhile his grassroots campaign group, Momentum, has been accused of organising its members to vote for non-Brexit topics yesterday to ensure that no vote could take place at conference on the UK staying a member of the Single Market.

A Labour MEP told The Telegraph: "It's Stalinist, and so typical of how these people operate: shutting down debate they don't like.”

Ms Rowling is not the first commentator to suggest that Jeremy Corbyn is developing a personality cut.
