JK Rowling has shut down criticism over the fact that Fantastic Beasts 2 will not be addressing Dumbledore’s sexuality.

The world-renowned author hit back at online trolls on her Twitter account after it was revealed that the second film in the Fantastic Beasts franchise won’t “explicitly” mention the fact that Dumbledore is gay.

Fans were hoping that The Crimes of Grindelwald would reference the famed wizard’s homosexuality after Rowling herself explained how the Hogwarts headmaster had fallen in love with the dark wizard during his youth.

Alongside a GIF of a guy hitting the mute button, Rowling posted: “Being sent abuse about an interview that didn't involve me, about a screenplay I wrote but which none of the angry people have read, which is part of a five-movie series that's only one instalment in, is obviously tons of fun, but you know what's even *more* fun?”

The 52-year-old then added: “Yep. Twitter without the mute button would be hell. (Heaven would be an edit button, @Twitter).”

The interview in question was with director David Yates, but the Scottish author had been being targeted by unhappy fans online – despite the film series having a lot more to come.

Yates said: “Not explicitly [will it be made clear]. But I think all the fans are aware of that. He had a very intense relationship with Grindelwald when they were young men.

“They fell in love with each other’s ideas, and ideology and each other,” he added – with Rowling’s tweet hinting that this relationship could be explored in future films.

The film stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander and Callum Turner has joined the cast as his older brother Theseus, with Zoe Kravitz’s character Leta Lestrange as Theseus’ fiancé.

Johnny Depp plays titled Grindelwald in the hotly-anticipated flick having made a brief appearance towards the end of the first film.

Fantastic Beasts 2: The Crimes of Grindelwald will be released in November 2018.
