Joanna Lumley Explores Japan’s Islands In New ITV Series

Listen up, sweetie darlings – We have some absolutely fabulous news.

Joanna Lumley is set to travel to the far reaches of Japan for a new three-part documentary series on ITV.

The ‘Ab Fab’ star will begin her adventure in the north, in Hokkadio, home to some of the country’s most beautiful and endangered wild animals.

Next, she will visit Honshu, the largest and most populated of Japan’s islands, and then, in contrast, she will journey through the forgotten island of Shikoku, before visiting the streets of Tokyo and the capital city of Kyoto.

Exploring the country’s rich cultural history and taking in the staggering landscapes, the 70-year-old will travel over 2000 miles by boat, train, plane and foot.

Speaking of the opportunity, the actress shared: “Isn’t it odd, we feel we are so familiar with Japan, with sushi and Toshiba, Kimonos and Hello Kitty, tsunamis and sake… and yet when we travelled around that spectacular country I couldn’t even guess at the unknown wonders that were in store for us.

“Every moment was thrilling, fascinating and often very moving. With my hand on my heart I can say: please come with me… to Japan!”

‘Joanna Lumley’s Japan’ is commissioned for 3 x 60 minute episodes on ITV by Jo Clinton-Davis, controller of factual entertainment, who said of the series: “Exotic, enchanting, exciting, Japan is a country with so many gifts and with her natural warmth, vibrant curiosity and inimitable humour, Joanna Lumley is uniquely equipped to bring them home to our viewers as she guides us through this latest adventure.”

Joanna’s previous travel documentaries have seen her exploring Greek islands, sailing up the River Nile and travelling more than 6,000 miles from Hong Kong to Moscow on the Trans-Siberian Railway – but we have a feeling that we’ll be adding Japan to our travel wish list after this next series.
