Former Vice President Joe Biden said we are living in "one of the most dangerous times in modern history", before attacking Donald Trump's administration for taking advantage of “pain and change”.

The veteran senator went on to accuse the current government of letting down working class voters who supported the President during his election campaign.

“I think it’s one of the most dangerous times in modern history,” he told a crowd at the Miami Book Fair.

He added: “Do you think [Trump] really cares about the kids I grew up with in Scranton, Pennsylvania, as far as their economic well being?”

In a thinly veiled reference to former White House strategist Steve Bannon, he said the President and his advisors of taking advantage of “pain and change” and pushing “half-baked nationalism”

“I think that there have always been voices in our country — and particularly in the 19th and 20th century in Europe — that have always tried to take advantage of pain and change,” he added.

The former vice president made similar comments earlier this week.

“The journey of this country has always been: When we run into this phony populism that occurs, it always gets pushed back,“ he told a crowd in New York.

“It's one step back, three steps forward.”
