Joe Biden’s youngest son is dating the widow of his other son, Beau, with the blessing of his father, according to media reports.
Beau Biden died in 2015 at the age of 46 after a prolonged fight with brain cancer. His father has since said his death made it impossible to run for the presidency last year, despite the urging of many Democratic voters.
The former vice president confirmed that his other son Hunter was now in a relationship with Beau’s widow Hallie and that both he and his wife had offered their blessing.
We are all lucky that Hunter and Hallie found each other as they were putting their lives together again after such sadness
“We are all lucky that Hunter and Hallie found each other as they were putting their lives together again after such sadness,” he said in a statement given to The New York Post.
“They have mine and Jill’s full and complete support and we are happy for them.”
Hunter Biden, 47, who has three daughters with his estranged wife Kathleen, also told the newspaper: “Hallie and I are incredibly lucky to have found the love and support we have for each other in such a difficult time, and that’s been obvious to the people who love us most.
“We’ve been so lucky to have family and friends who have supported us every step of the way.”
He reportedly separated from his wife five months after his brother’s death.
Beau Biden's death was the latest in a string of tragedies to have marked his father's life.
Joe Biden's first wife and one-year-old daughter died in a car crash in 1972, weeks after he was elected to the US Senate.
Beau Biden, who was three at the time, survived the crash along with his younger brother Hunter. Joe Biden was sworn in as a US senator at their hospital bedside.
Beau Biden eventually followed his father into politics. He was elected attorney general of his home state of Delaware and intended to run for governor in 2016, a move some observers said could lead to a run for the White House.
