Joe Gomez has signed an extension to his Liverpool contract that will keep him at Anfield until 2024.

The young defender, who last put pen to paper on a fresh Reds deal in January 2017, has agreed new and improved terms once again after enjoying an impressive start to the season.

The 21-year-old made a starting berth alongside Virgil van Dijk at centre-back his own before sustaining a leg fracture in last week’s 3-1 win at Burnley.

That injury is expected to keep him sidelined for six weeks, but he will return having received yet more recognition of his rapid development in recent seasons.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Gomez said: “Signing this new deal means the world to me.

“I’ve been at the club a few years now and have had the pleasure to play for Liverpool and experience what that means, so I am delighted to get the chance to extend my contract here.

“I love the club, I love playing and learning here, and I am happy for that to continue.”

Signed from Charlton Athletic in 2015, Gomez enjoyed a successful start to his Anfield stay in quickly breaking into the first team at full-back.

However, his Reds career was temporarily halted by a serious knee injury sustained while on England U21s duty - that blow being dealt in the week Jurgen Klopp took charge of the Reds.

After recovering from that injury, the Englishman played a prominent role in last season’s run to the Champions League final and a second consecutive qualification for the competition, sharing right-back duties with Trent Alexander-Arnold.

But this year he has been restored to his more natural centre-half position, and combined brilliantly with Van Dijk in a partnership that has helped the Reds concede just six league goals in 15 games.

And the Catford-born centre-back believes the future is looking bright for Liverpool, who sit top of the Premier League thanks in large part to their fine defensive record.

“All the signs show where the club is heading, where our team is heading,” he continued.

“We got so close last year in the European competition and in the league this year, we’ve shown such good character in the start to the season so far.

“[It’s] our best start ever as club, so that shows if there is ever a time to have belief in the club and where we’re going, it is now.”
