Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton has been charged with drink driving after police pulled over his vehicle and arrested him early today.
The Brazilian footballer was detained at 1.20am and will appear in court later this month, according to Northumbria Police.
The force said: "Officers pulled over a vehicle in the Ponteland Road area of Newcastle and arrested the occupant.
"Joelinton Cassio, 26, of Ponteland, has since been charged with driving whilst above the prescribed limit for alcohol.
"He is due to appear before magistrates in Newcastle on January 26."
Newcastle United are aware of the incident but are not commenting.
The 26-year-old has been a vital part of manager Eddie Howe's side this season, making 21 appearances in all competitions so far.
He scored the second goal on Tuesday night in Newcastle's 2-0 Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Leicester City.
Joelinton moved to Tyneside in 2019 after making a £40m move from German side Hoffenheim.
