John Amos: First Look at His Last Acting Role on Suits: L.A.

Before John Amos died on Aug. 21, the actor filmed a guest spot in the pilot of NBC’s upcoming series Suits: L.A., and TVLine has a first look at what would turn out to be Amos’ final acting role.

The Emmy-nominated actor, who is best known for playing family patriarch James Evans on CBS’ Good Times, appears in the spinoff as himself, our sister site Deadline reports. Amos shot the episode in April 2024.

Set in the world of the original USA Network drama, Suits: L.A. — which does not yet have a premiere date — follows a brand new character, Ted Black (played by Arrow vet Stephen Amell), a former federal prosecutor from New York who “has reinvented himself representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles,” per the official synopsis. “Amos” is a client at the law firm run by Ted, with whom he has a longstanding friendship.

Lex Scott Davis, who plays the firm’s rising star, Erica Rollins, paid tribute to Amos, writing in her Instagram story, “Was lucky enough to meet this icon during the filming of #SuitsLA. My heart hurts. Peace to this man, and love to his family.”

Amos’ son, Kelly Christopher Amos, told The Hollywood Reporter that his father passed on Aug. 21 at the age of 84 of natural causes. (TMZ on Oct. 2 reported that Amos died of congestive heart failure.)

“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” Kelly Amos wrote in a statement announcing his father’s passing. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”
