A festive video has sent social media into an excited flurry, with viewers confident it is a teaser for this year’s John Lewis Christmas advert.

The 10-second clip was uploaded by a mysterious Twitter account on Monday, under the name Excitable Edgar, alongside a bio stating: “Loves all things festive. Christmas trees, Christmas food, Christmas snow, Christmas lights…”

The atmospheric trailer begins with a child’s hand knocking at a wooden door using a handle shaped like a dragon’s head.

Snowflakes gently flutter as the door slowly opens to reveal the glow of a cosy fire-light room, before the shot cuts to a mountain scene with a final message reading: “Meet Edgar. 14.11.19 #ExcitableEdgar.”

The clip has been met with growing hype, after one Twitter user asked: “Anybody else thinking #johnlewischristmasadvert?”

One sleuth observed: “99 per cent sure this is John Lewis, this twitter account is registered to a gmail address which starts with the letters ‘jl’.”

Another user replied with a clip of Moz the Monster from the retailer’s 2017 advert, presumably to draw suitable parallels between John Lewis’s furry creation and Edgar’s fantastical door-knocker.

If the clip is indeed a teaser for the hotly anticipated advert, and the "14.11.19" date featured is to be believed, audiences can expect the full-length version on Thursday.

However, despite the speculation, John Lewis has refused to confirm any connection to the anonymous video.

A spokesperson for the retailer told the Standard: “We’ve not announced when we’ll be launching our Christmas campaign, but all will be revealed soon and we aren’t giving any details away until then.”

Last year's high budget John Lewis offering, released on November 15, was titled The Boy & The Piano and starred Sir Elton John.

It began with the 71-year-old music icon sat at a piano, playing the first few notes of his famous hit Your Song.

From there, it tracked backwards through his life, from some of his best-known shows to studio recording sessions and finally to him as a young boy receiving a piano from his mother and grandmother for Christmas.

It ended with Sir Elton sat at the same piano in the present day and the tagline: “Some gifts are more than just a gift.”

John Lewis has worked with advertising agency Adam&Eve DDB every year since 2008 to create its now-iconic Christmas campaigns, which have become synonymous with the start of the festive period for many Brits, as one Excitable Edgar follower illustrated.

Commenting to a friend on Twitter, she wrote: “Rumour has it this is a teaser for the John Lewis ad! Tell Lynn this means I’m definitely putting my tree up now.”
