Prankster: Chris Moyles was behind the ad: Radio X

Chris Moyles is the ultimate troll.

The Radio X presenter has been hailed a “genius” after revealing he was the prankster behind the fake John Lewis advert.

The Internet was sent into a frenzy earlier this week when a clip of an astronaut playing Sir Elton John’s Rocket Man on a piano next to a Christmas tree surfaced online.

The short clip was widely taken to be a teaser for the department store's hotly anticipated Christmas advert – but it was Moyles and his Radio X team.

The station’s official Twitter account broke the news on Friday morning, posting the “full version” for fans, which sees Moyles dressed as Donald Duck.

The tweet read: “We have something to reveal this morning. Something to claim. Or admit.

“That ‘John Lewis Ad’ that leaked on Sunday, it wasn’t real. And we know, because we filmed it.”

Moyles was hailed a “legend” and the biggest “stitch up” as fans revealed they had fallen for the joke.

One listener tweeted: “Love how you've trolled the press completely hahaha!”

Another wrote: “Absolutely brilliant, you’ve outdone yourselves.”

A third posted a crying with laughter emoji alongside the words: “The art of trolling!!”

Moyles parodied John Lewis' famous penguin ad from 2014 which saw Monty the penguin befriend a little boy while searching for someone to love.

Sir Elton John has reportedly been paid £5 million to appear in this year’s advert, which makes up half of the advert’s £10 million budget.

A source told the Mail on Sunday that this year’s ad will be another “tear-jerker”.

“It is all very, very charming and the exciting crescendo at the end will be Elton playing his famous piano,” they said.
