John Lewis & Partners has announced the launch of its first sustainable womenswear collection in collaboration with eco brand Mother of Pearl.

The London-based label, which has never been available to buy on the high street before, has joined forces with the retailer to create a 33-piece collection, which comprises a range of ethereal slips and fluid tailoring.

The collection has been made using exclusively Tencel, viscose and organic GOTS-certified cotton, and all of the clothes will have tags which explain how the fabrics are made in a really simple way so that customers can easily understand them.

John Lewis & Partners, which was founded in 1864, has been increasingly keen to enter the conversation surrounding sustainability.

Eighty eight per cent of the cotton used in the high street retailer's own-line collection is sustainably sourced - a 175 per cent increase on last year.

The retailer is also currently piloting a buy-back scheme. which invites customers to bring in old clothes bought from John Lewis & Partners that they no longer want, so that the retailer can give them a second life (this is being trialled in the Oxford store at the moment.)

Commenting on the collection, Amy Powney, Creative Director of Mother of Pearl, said: "The opportunity to introduce a fashion lead, sustainably produced collection nationwide is something I am very proud to be part of. Making beautiful pieces for the high street with the most sustainable fabrics and production is not an easy task, but working with the John Lewis & Partners team has made this a reality."

Mother of Pearl was founded in 2002 and currently showcases its collections at London and Copenhagen Fashion Weeks.

The collection will be available at select John Lewis & Partners shops and on johnlewis.com in April 2020. Prices ranges from £59-£179.
