Doctor Who fans, prepare to get your thinking caps on: somehow, John Simm is returning as The Master.
The actor has been confirmed to make a comeback in Series 10 as the villainous Time Lord when the BBC sci-fi show returns at Easter.
Simm’s final appearance as the maniacal mastermind came in 2010 at the end of David Tennant’s run as the titular hero.
The character made a surprise comeback in Series 8 as ‘Missy’ – a female regeneration of The Master, played by Michelle Gomez.
Intriguingly, Gomez and Simm will both be playing The Master / Missy at the same time – so prepare for some ‘wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey’ logic.
“I can confirm that it’s true, thanks to the power of time travel I’m back,” Simm said in a BBC statement.
“It’s always a pleasure to work with this great team of people and I can’t wait for you all to see what the Master gets up to in the next series.”
Writer and executive producer Steven Moffat added: “Nothing stays secret for long on Doctor Who but you'll have to wait a little bit longer to see exactly what the Master is up to and how he makes his return to face the Doctor.
“It’s been a huge pleasure to have fan favourites John Simm and Michelle Gomez face to face in the same role! It’s not often you get to see a solo personality clash.”
The secret return of Simm was intended to be a surprise for fans, but leaked following a press screening of the Series 10 opener The Pilot.
The show returns with Peter Capaldi’s final run as The Doctor on April 15.
