John Simm says there is an 'idea' for Life on Mars revival

John Simm has said there have been discussions about bringing back Life on Mars.

The acclaimed BBC drama originally ran between 2006 and 2007 but there have long been calls from fans for a third series.

Appearing on Lorraine to promote the second series of ITV drama Grace, Simm admitted 'there has been talk' of Life on Mars returning.

He added: "Me and Phil [Glenister] talked to Matthew [Graham] and Ashley [Pharoah] the two co-creators and they gave us this brilliant idea about how it could come back."

However the former Doctor Who star refused to be drawn on what the series could be about, saying: "I can’t obviously tell you what it is. But fingers crossed."

There have been rumours about Life on Mars returning since 2020, without anything being confirmed by the BBC.

Dean Andrews, who starred in Life on Mars and its spin-off Ashes to Ashes, said earlier this year: "It seems to be something that is still ongoing. And you know, if I was a betting man, I might put a couple of quid on it."

Life on Mars starred Simm as a police officer transported from the 21st Century back to 1973 after being hit by a car.

While in 1973, Simm's character attempts to get back to the present while solving crimes in the seventies. The show was popular for using popular music of the time such as David Bowie, Paul McCartney and Roxy Music.

A spin-off — Ashes to Ashes — starring the show's regular cast apart from Simm aired from 2008 to 2010 and established the past timeline's as a purgatory for police officers before they die.

Ashes to Ashes, which also starred Keeley Hawes, was not as well received as its predecessor but received better reviews towards the end of its run.
