Is it just us or is every movie getting the shared universe treatment?

We haven't hit rock bottom just yet (that'll be when we get a Paul Blart: Maul Cop cinematic franchise) but every time a perfectly solid film that comfortably exists as its own thing has a bunch of spin-offs announced, we roll our eyes a bit.

The latest in the franchise factory line is John Wick, a soon-to-be trilogy of very good action films starring Keanu Reeves.

Now The Hollywood Reporter states that Lionsgate has picked up the script for a female-led action film called Ballerina that it wants to serve as part of the John Wick universe.

The script has been written by 23-year old Shay Hatten, a rising star who has been taken under Robert Downey Jr's wing (imagine Peter Parker's 'Stark internship' from Spider-Man: Homecoming, but in real life and with less web-swinging).

Ballerina is said to be a hyper-stylised assassin movie in the vein of Luc Beeson's early project La Femme Nikita, and will focus on a young woman seeking revenge on those who killed her family.

In addition to this spin-off and the third John Wick film, there is also a prequel TV series in the works because of course there is.

Titled The Continental, Keanu Reeves' character isn't said to be the focus, but he might make an appearance.
