Johnstone Burgh boss Murdo MacKinnon says he is “really disappointed” after his side lost 2-0 to reigning champions Beith.

Goals from The Mighty's Ben Lewis and Andy Monk were enough to see the North Ayrshire side collect all three points in the West of Scotland League Premier Division on Saturday..

But frustrated MacKinnon feels they were “poor goals” to concede. Speaking to Burgh’s media team after the match, he said: “I don’t have any complaints about [the result]. It is a fair result. Beith were far more competitive in how they went about the game.

“I felt that we didn’t start the game well. You need to go and win your duels and stuff like that within the game. I can count on one hand how many people went and competed well.

“So, I am really disappointed with that and the two goals we lost are really poor, particularly the first one, a ball that is just thrown into the box. I am really disappointed with that; that is a goal that you don’t expect to happen at this level.”

This defeat is fourth-placed Burgh's second home loss of the season after they were defeated by table-topping Clydebank earlier on in the campaign.

Largs Thistle sit in second spot, three points ahead of MacKinnon’s side, with Drumchapel United a point clear with a game in hand.

However, league business will be parked as Burgh return to knockout action in the first round of the West of Scotland Cup when they will welcome Vale of Leven to Keanie Park this weekend.

Vale are in the Third Division but MacKinnon has warned his side not to be complacent about the challenge ahead.

Explaining that the West Dunbartonshire side will be looking to cause an upset, he said: “It is like a cup final for them coming and wanting to do well and showcase themselves and quite rightly so.

“I have been in that position before and I know what it is about coming to teams in leagues above you. We need to be miles better than what we were [here] or we can come undone.”
