Join Budleigh's thrilling book club experience at the Literary Festival

Be part of Budleigh’s biggest book club at this year’s Literary Festival. In a twist on the traditional book group, every year the Festival selects a Festival Read and invites the author along to be part of the readers’ discussions.

This year’s chosen title is A Game of Lies, a gripping thriller about the dark side of reality TV by police officer-turned multi-award winning author Clare Mackintosh, who will be appearing at the Festival on Wednesday 18 September. Tickets are on sale now at

The book tells the story of seven reality show contestants who end up stranded in the Welsh mountains with no idea what they've signed up for. Each of these strangers has a secret and the show will force them to expose one another live on air. And when a murderer strikes, every one of Detective Ffion Morgan’s suspects has an alibi, and a secret worth killing for.

The Festival Read is supported through sponsorship of several local businesses and readers can buy a copy and read ahead of the event, with copies available on sale at Pebble of Budleigh and the Rowan Tree for £6 (RRP £9.99).

“Claire is an internationally bestselling writer, so it is very exciting to have her with us to talk about her latest thriller,” says festival artistic director Annie Ashworth.

Sue Briggs, Chair of Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival committee, adds: “We are grateful to the many businesses who support the Festival Read through their sponsorship. It’s commitments like these which enable us to offer these kinds of activities.”

Tickets are £10 per person, with a group (five people) ticket available for £40. The ticket includes a glass of wine/soft drink in the Festival Marquee. Audience can also order a sharing platter, created by local café Milena’s, in advance to enjoy in the Marquee after the event to enjoy while they talk about what they’ve read.

This year’s Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival takes place on September 18-22, with an exciting mix of authors and speakers due to be announced in July.

Tickets are on sale to Festival Friends from July 15 and on general sale on July 22. For priority booking, sign up to be a Festival Friend via the website at
