JoJo Siwa and kicked off her Dancing with the Stars stint with a bang.

The YouTuber looked radiant on stage as she and her professional dancing partner, Jenna Johnson, performed a quickstep to an upbeat cover of Jet’s hit song “Are You Gonna Be My Girl”.

Though Johnson had a small slip during their performance, she and Siwa continued on and even earned the highest score – a 29 out of 40 – of the night.

After the dance was completed, Bruno Tonioli, one of the four judges on the show, said the dance was a “groundbreaking moment” for Dancing with the Stars, USA Today reported.

JoJo Siwa, who came out as part of the LGBT+ community in January, said she is “really, really proud” to be “dancing with another female”.

“I came out in early 2021 and what I love to do is make truly being who you are easier for kids,” Siwa added, People reported.

Fans and viewers shared their pride too, taking to social media after the historic moment.

Siwa previously told USA Today that she told Dancing with the Stars’ producers that she would “love and prefer to dance with a girl” when she first spoke about appearing on the show.

She wanted to be part of a same-sex coupling to drive home the message that “you can love whomever you want to love”.

“I have a girlfriend [Kylie Prew] who is the love of my life and who is everything to me,” JoJo Siwa said. “My journey of coming out and having a girlfriend has inspired so many people around the world.”

She continued: “I thought that if I chose to dance with a girl on this show, it would break the stereotypical thing.

“It would be new, different and change for the better.”
