Jonathan Barter launches Labour campaign to champion Tiverton and Minehead

Labour's Jonathan Barter has launched his General Election campaign for the newly created Tiverton and Minehead constituency.

Speaking as the campaign launched Jonathan said: “I am proud of Labour’s missions for a better Britain and how rural communities will benefit. This constituency matters. I grew up here, live here, and will listen to you. I understand the importance of engaging the whole community, not just those who have voted Labour before.

“Children and families are the reason I go to work and I have been delivering for them, as a secondary school teacher, for 8 years. I have lived and worked here my whole life and face the same day-to-day challenges including the cost-of-living, as every other resident.

“I will prioritise issues facing rural communities. People deserve decent public transport, the ability to see a dentist, social care, affordable homes and the ability to earn a living whether it's in public service, business, farming, or any of our local industries.”

Jonathan has been speaking to residents across the constituency and will continue to do so in the coming weeks.

He said: “I am looking forward to visiting places you wouldn’t normally expect to see Labour. Chatting to people in places like Combe Florey, Wivey, Uffculme and Langford Budville has reaffirmed my belief that Labour will deliver for them just as much as for people in Minehead or Tiverton, or indeed Bristol or London.”

Jonathan’s five key pledges for the area are as follows:

Cost of living – “As a local resident I'm facing the cost-of-living crisis like we all are. People need more money in their pockets. Energy and food bills need to come down. The economy needs to serve working people again. I will work tirelessly as your MP to make this happen.”

Decent public services – “As a teacher I see the decline in public services up close. Labour will recruit more doctors, nurses, teachers and police officers. We will tackle NHS waiting lists and restore local dental services.”

Fighting for climate justice – “We are in a climate emergency. Farmers need to preserve their livelihoods and we all need affordable food, water and energy. Our children deserve access in future to the nature we enjoy today. Labour's green transition will cut carbon, and make our economy fit to meet these challenges.”

Securing rural transport - “We need more local bus services. Local roads need fixing. In our constituency the ability to travel has never been more important, particularly for the elderly, vulnerable or isolated. Labour will reconnect our rural communities and get areas like ours moving again.”

Affordable, quality homes - “People should be able to live where they grew up. We need more affordable homes, while maintaining the character of areas like ours, and making sure green space is preserved.”
