Miller wrote on Instagram: "Today I qualified as a Firefighter 1 after a five month course at Suffolk County Fire Academy. Huge thank you to all the instructors, but especially Chief Sicilian, who took great care of class 2, and never got mad at us (externally)."

He added: "Can't wait to serve the community I love on Fire Island NY."

During his training, Miller, who is best known for his roles in The Crown and Elementary, posted numerous shots of himself in a firefighter's uniform.

Completing the course means Miller is now trained to a basic firefighter level. The course involves a written exam, a physical fitness test and a medical examination. He will have been trained in rescuing people, knot tying and fire control.

The 50-year-old, who recently starred as John Major in The Crown, is not the first Hollywood star to double as a firefighter.

Before becoming a working actor, Steve Buscemi was a full-time firefighter from 1980 to 1984 and later volunteered at his old fire house after 9/11. He worked daily 12 hour shifts searching through rubble for missing people.

Character actor Robert John Burke, who is best known for his performances in TV shows Rescue Me, Gossip Girl and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit as well as films Robocop 3, Safe and BlackKklansman, is still an active firefighter and captain of his own engine.

Miller can next be seen in a supporting role in Guy Ritchie's The Covenant which is released on Prime Video on 2 June.
