A barber who cut the hair of leading golfer Jordan Spieth has promised the multimillionaire sportsman a free trim and shave for life after he was given his biggest ever tip.

Spieth, the world number six, visited Magic Barbers in the small Angus town of Carnoustie on Saturday morning, hours before playing his third round at the Open championship.

The 24-year-old, who has made around £30 million in prize money so far in his career, later joked that the barber, Fryad Salami, “went a little high and tight” with the scissors.

The cut has drawn a lot of attention, with fellow golfer Kevin Kisner even asked for his thoughts on it during a press conference.

Spieth, from Texas, described the trim as a “very British haircut,” saying on Saturday: “It was intended to be what I normally get but instead he went a little shorter. Shaved on the sides, a little longer on top. It is what it is.”

But Salami told the Daily Telegraph: “He asked for a number three or a number four on the sides and back, a just a little tidy up on top. He has said I cut it higher than he is used to, but he is from America and this is how we do it in the Scottish summer.”

Spieth was unsure whether he had been recognised by Salami, who did not talk to him about golf. But Kurdish Salami, who moved to Scotland three months ago, said that he was simply too nervous to interrogate the golfer about the tournament.

“I thought it was Spieth, but I was too shy to ask because I was not quite sure,” Salami said. “Instead I just decided to treat him like any other customer.

“He gave me £20 for a £9 haircut - it’s the biggest tip I have ever had. Normally we only ever get £1 or £2 as a tip. If he ever wants to come back, he is guaranteed a free haircut and shave for life.”
