Jordan Thompson toasted a stunning week of performances at the LTA’s Surbiton Trophy after beating Denis Kudla in Sunday’s final, writes Oli Dickson Jefford in Surbiton.

The Australian was the eight seed at the tournament and came from a break down in the opening set to beat eighth seed Kudla 7-5 6-3 to win the title for the first time, having lost in the final in 2017.

Having come through his first five grass matches of the year unbeaten, the 28-year-old was understandably pleased with his week as a whole and his final display.

"I’m probably most pleased with me attitude," said Thompson. "I played a very good match, very clean. Denis maybe should have taken that first set, but I hung tough and managed to squeak that first set out.

In the second I thought I was a little bit more dominant and had a few more break points, managed to break away and serve it out well. I think I served it out to love so that’s always nice when you’re serving out to love.”

Thompson’s best results have come in grass with his sole ATP Tour final coming in s-Hertogenbosch in 2019, as well as a win over then world No.1 Andy Murray at Queen’s in 2017.

And having started his grass court summer in perfect fashion, he is satisfied with his overall level is heading into a busy few weeks of action.

“I think grass is one of my favourite surfaces. My best results have come on grass so I was always feel pretty comfortable. I feel like I move well on it and serve and return pretty soundly so I’m just happy to be back on the green stuff,” Thompson commented.

“I just want to keep winning matches. One match at a time, one point at a time and just have the right attitude.”
